Skólahljómsveit Kopavogs: Kópavogur Youth Concert Band

Skólahljómsveit Kopavogs, “Kópavogur Youth Band” was founded in 1966 and held its first concert on February 22, 1967. Mr Bjorn Guőjónsson, formerly a trumpet player with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra founded the orchestra and was its conductor for the first 27 years.

The Band is run as a small music school in Kópavogur, a suburb of Reykjavik, and has close connections with the primary schools (children aged 6 to 15). In all there are about 145 pupils in the school, divided into three orchestras according to age and ability. The Band visiting Italy & Croatia is the oldest group with students aged 13-21.

The band gives concerts for schools and the town. During the springtime it also plays as a marching band on the streets of the town during festivals.
