Istrian building heritage of the Venetian era

The Zuccato Palace

On the corner of Decumanus and Cardo in Poreč is the Zuccato Palace, today a gallery. Although the Gothic palace has kept its original facade, the interior layout has not been preserved.

The Zuccato Palace is a three-storey building with the ground- and first floor built from stone, while the second was made of brick. The latter was also embellished by architectural details made of stone such as its corner fortifications and, naturally, windows, thus standing out on the reddish brick. The main facade opening on the Decumanus Street has Gothic double lancet windows with a trefoil floral finish, first in the row, while the other single lancet windows follow suit. It is interesting to note that the first floor double lancet and the first single lancet window of the Cardo facade were made of stone from Korčula as visible in its colour, different from the rest. They represent the only imported feature in Poreč of the time. Unfortunately, the inner layout has not been preserved.
