Ecomuseum Vlaški Puti
In the border area of the Učka Nature Park, in the village of Šušnjevica, only 20 km away from Labin, the Interpretation Centre Vlaski puti was opened. Šušnjevica is known for its Romanian-speaking language, or Vlach, which is protected as an intangible cultural heritage of Croatia. Since the natural transfer from parents to children has been interrupted, this language has become extremely endangered, so the aim of the centre is to preserve the history, tradition and culture of the area.
The museum with a médiathèque is located on the ground floor of the renovated primary school, where you can see thematic roads across Učka called Contraband Roads. The contraband took place in the 1930s when the local residents used to sell agricultural products across Učka to the duty-free zone in Kvarner. They carried 50 kilos of hens and chickens on their shoulders in cages, and they would walk across the inhospitable mountainous terrain for 2 to 3 hours to reach Lovran and Rijeka.
