Spring of Istrian wines
Spring in Istria is abundant with events in honour of wine!
With the first warmer rays of the sun, you can embark on your wine walk! Organized walking itineraries will reveal different parts of our peninsula through a pleasant stroll with attractive rest points-gourmet points. Along with taking a break in the fresh air, you will also enjoy an excellent gastronomic offering: from wine cellars and distilleries to taverns, agritourisms, and various tasting rooms of indigenous Istrian products.
Easter Monday is traditionally reserved for the popular Gračišće Wine Exhibition, which takes place in central Istria in a historic town situated on a hill near Pazin. From Gračišće, there is a breathtaking view of the marvellous landscape of the interior part of the Istrian peninsula, but the place has also been recognized for a whole decade for this unique celebration that attracts thousands of wine lovers.
This is the day when, from about fifteen taverns, several hundred wines from the central Istria area are offered, mostly local varieties such as Istrian Malvasia and Teran. The urban structure of Gračišće serves as an excellent backdrop, so the exhibition resembles a medieval fair - the old taverns and crowded alleys are just a part of the old-fashioned way of life that this event will evoke for travellers.
The spring months also bring the biggest wine events to Poreč. April is the month for the World of Malvasias, an international competition of wines made from the Malvasia variety. This competition, which started in 2009, is organized by the Association of winegrowers and winemakers of Istria, which also organizes the exhibition of the same name. The prestigious Vinistra, a modern exhibition that brings together the best winemakers from Istria and the surrounding regions, takes place in May. Alongside the three-day showcase in the Žatika hall, the city dons festive attire and lives to the rhythm of the Vinistra After Party. The fun and tastings can continue in one of the many Poreč restaurants, bars, and hospitality establishments on the waterfront or in the old town.
On the last Sunday of May, you must not miss the Open wine cellars day, a great occasion for a tour around the peninsula and an opportunity to get acquainted with the lush Istrian wine scene.
