Šuran

Rovinj-Rovigno

Rovinj winemaker Rino Šuran spent the majority of his professional career in the real estate market, taking up agriculture as a passionate hobby. In the early 1990s, Rino and his wife Antonietta embarked on a new venture, establishing a small farm at the picturesque micro location of Calandra, near the ornithological park Palud-Palù, south of Rovinj.

Initially, they focused exclusively on producing olive oil, planting a rich variety of olives, including Leccino, Pendolino, Bianchera, Ascolana, and Itrana. However, they wished to try their hand at wine production, so in 2007 they decided to plant vineyards. For white varieties, they chose Istrian Malvasia and the traditional Muskaton, and for red varieties, they selected Merlot, Shiraz, and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.

During his first five years of winemaking, Šuran employed standard, conventional methods, earning several prestigious awards. However, this did not satisfy his quest for excellence, and in 2013, he embraced a biodynamic approach. The pinnacle of his efforts in biodynamic production is the Demeter Certification, a rare accolade he achieved for his wines. This certification, first issued in 1928, is the oldest and most prestigious mark of its kind.
