Church of St.Catherine, Vodnjan

Because of the preserved Romanesque architectural and stylistic features, dating from the 12th century, it may be considered one of the oldest sacral edifices in town. The church once stood beyond the inhabited area and was a pilgrimage site until the 17th century when the town developed and the church became part of it.

The roof of the church was originally covered by stone slates that can nowadays be seen only on the protruding apse. The church facade has a rectangular entrance accentuated by massive door jambs and two smaller windows with stone frames. The church interior yielded well preserved medieval frescoes and inscribed drawings and graffiti. Restoration in the church is under way.
