Istrian frescoes: The Church of St. Catherine, Svetvinčenat
The Church of St. Catherine is a simple 15th century edifice with a bell gable and a portico added in the 18 century. Frescoes inside the church are placed along the northern, southern and western walls of the chapel.
They represent the cycle dedicated to the legend of this saint. The central part of the southern wall depicts scenes of her engagement. In the central field is the Virgin Mary with Christ. St. Catherine extends her hand towards Christ, so that he may, according to legend, place an engagement ring on her finger symbolizing mystical engagement. Frescoes were made under the influence of the 15th century Italian i.e. the Venetian school of painting.
